Overview:
Air India Flight 171, a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner (registration VT-ANB), was flying from Ahmedabad to London Gatwick. Just 36 seconds after takeoff, it lost altitude and crashed into the B.J. Medical College hostel area in Ahmedabad, causing massive destruction.

Casualties:

  • Total onboard: 242 (230 passengers, 12 crew)
  • Onboard fatalities: 241
  • Ground fatalities: 39+ (mostly students in hostel)
  • Only 1 survivor: Vishwash Kumar (seat 11A)

Response & Rescue:
Emergency response included:

  • NDRF, Fire Brigade, CRPF, and police
  • Over 600 medical personnel helped
  • Victims rushed via ‘green corridor’ to hospitals

Investigation:

  • Black box and voice recorder recovered

  • Possible causes: engine failure, flap error, fuel problem

Compensation:

  • ₹1 crore per victim from Tata Group
  • ₹25 lakh interim relief by Air India
